Doing the Impossible

Home > Pastor's Blog > Doing the Impossible

George Perdikis, an original founder of the newsboys, came out in an article in standupfortruth.com to admit his atheism. In 2007 he renounced his Christianity and declared his new found freedom from God. His statement about the reason for his renunciation is quoted below.

“I always felt uncomfortable with the strict rules imposed by Christianity. All I wanted to do was create and play rock and roll… and yet most of the attention I received was focused on how well I maintained the impossible standards of religion. I wanted my life to be measured by my music, not by my ability to resist temptation.”

“Impossible standards of religion.” This is the key phrase! Are the core teachings of Christianity “impossible” to actually live? This is a good question and one that many people ask today in and out of the church.

The scripture addresses this issue as well. In fact it is clear in the New Testament that it is impossible to live to God’s standards! Perdikis is right! So if you are trying to live a “Christian” life you are doomed to failure. So it is impossible to achieve the “standards of religion.” With God however, all things are possible!

“For nothing will be impossible with God.”
(Luke 1:37)

He replied, “What is impossible with men is possible with God.”
(Luke 18:27)

Now without faith it is impossible to please God, for the one who draws near to Him must believe that He exists and rewards those who seek Him.
(Hebrews 11:6)

Christianity is not just some quaint belief structure that permeates our culture but a Living breathing organism empowered by Christ. It is not just about music or behavior to Biblical rules and regulations.

you yourselves, as living stones, are being built into a spiritual house for a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
(1 Peter 2:5)

When you are truly Christ like and Christ led, then you can actually enjoy the freedom in Christ’s forgiveness. Each one who is a follower of Christ and empowered by Him continues to do the work of Christ here on this earth. There is no substitute for the presence and power of the living God in our lives.

Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.
(Romans 12:2)

To be real followers of Christ we need to be daily transformed by the renewing of our minds in Christ. Let’s look at the 3 commands of Jesus.
1. Love God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength.
2. Love your neighbor as yourselves.
3. Love one another.
These three commands ought to guide all of our behavior and direction as Christians. To achieve these worthy behaviors (even by non-Christians standards) it is imperative to have your mind “renewed” daily by the love of Christ. This type of renewing comes by prayer, Bible study, true worship and meditation. These activities will be nothing more than a dreary exercise to one who is not truly a believer, leading to discouragement and ultimately renunciation of God. To a believer they bring comfort, joy and freedom. To the church it becomes the true “Body of Christ!”

So playing music in a band does not a Christian make! Just like attending a church does not a Christian make! To be a true follower of Christ you have to be dedicated to Him and open your heart and mind to a daily renewing. It is not about how much you do church or even how you live. It is about a living relationship with the one who forgives sins and guides us by His spirit.
